Liturgy
November 17, 2009
(Greek leitouria, “work of the people”)
Describes the traditional way in which people conduct their worship. This includes the process in which services are conducted by the leadership and the response of the laity. Liturgies can be very elaborate and dogmatic such as in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox church, or more traditionally driven such as in the Baptist church. For example, many non-denominational Evangelical churches in America practice a liturgy that includes congregational singing, offering, announcements, solo singing, preaching, and a concluding song. All Christian traditions follow liturgies, but not all esteem them as much as others. Biblically and theologically, there does not seem to be any one “biblical” liturgy, just principled guidelines.
